When You're Mine (MINE #3)(3)

I rubbed the front of my head, searching for answers. “No, I don’t remember.” This was freaking me out.

“I asked you if you wanted me to take you home and you said no. You said you didn’t want to be alone. So I brought you here. You were out cold by the time we arrived. I had to carry you up.”

Why would I say some crazy shit like that? And why don’t I remember any of it? The ache in my head grew stronger and fear lodged thick in my throat. I closed my eyes, swallowing back the tears and trying desperately to fight through the darkness. I couldn’t find a single memory that came after I went pummeling face first to the floor. The migraines were normal. Blacking out… not so much.

“Listen, I’m sorry about all of this. If you could just grab my purse, I can call a cab and get out of here,” I was completely embarrassed and clearly losing my damn mind.

I moved to get up, but his gentle hands held me in place. “You’re not going anywhere,” he said, in a voice that would ultimately prove to render me completely stupid.

“Barrett, I really appreciate your help, but…”

“Can I get you anything? You never ate, are you hungry?”

I forced my confused mind to focus on what he was saying. “What time is it?”

“9:45.”

“My bag. I need to take my medicine.”

He stood from the bed. “I’ll be right back.”

My hands drifted across the soft comforter. Tense muscles untangled themselves, allowing my body to sink further into the bed. My mind was still racing, trying to recall the last few hours but still… nothing. A stream of light snuck inside the room as he entered, quickly shutting the door behind him. He settled in beside me once more. “Here.”

The tips of his fingers grazed the palm of my hand, releasing the medicine I no longer needed. The fire in his touch made me forget about any remaining pressure inside my head, centered instead on the need building between my legs. “What is it?”

“I didn’t want you to have to turn on the light.”

“You went through my purse?” I can’t imagine what he must have seen rummaging through that bottomless black hole. An assortment of pills, condoms, tampons… an extra pair of panties.

He chuckled and the sound made my skin tingle. “Don’t worry, I have two sisters. It’s not anything I haven’t seen before.”

“Right,” I whispered, because that’s all my mouth would allow without sounding like a breathy slut.

Reaching for my other hand, he placed an ice cold glass within my grip. His hands were gentle, yet strong. I waited for a breath of air, but his touch had stolen the very wind from my lungs.

Whoa.

I quickly took the pills, downing the entire glass of water. We were swamped in darkness, but I could make out the faint outline of his face. “Would you like to put on something more comfortable? I was going to change you, but I was afraid you would freak out if you woke up in my clothes.”

“Good call. I’m already freaking out.”

A low throaty chuckle vibrated against my skin. I wrung my hands in my lap.

You can’t have him.

“Why are you freaking out?”

“Because I’m in a stranger’s home, in a stranger’s bed.”

Another sexy laugh tumbled from his mouth. “I’m not a stranger,”

“I don’t know you. That makes you a stranger.”

“Well, I do know one way we could fix that.” Our mouths were only a heartbeat away. I could feel his warm breath teasing my lips.

“How?” There was no match for the effect he had on me, complete domination of my every thought and breath. It was exciting and frightening. The potent combination had me wanting more.

“We get to know each other.”

Fuck.

That was all I wanted to do. That was the only way I wanted to get to know him. His face was so close to mine I could make out the supple line of his lips and the sliver of lust shining in his eyes. My fingers tingled to touch him and ride him into the wild unknown. “I’m not sleeping with you.” I yanked back a steely breath. “Ever,” I finished with resolve.

The right side of his mouth slid back, revealing a remarkable smile, one that reared immense determination. I held back a groan as he pushed from the bed. After opening a few drawers, he found what he was looking for. “For you to sleep in,” he said, placing a sweatshirt in my lap.

Was this a good idea? Probably not. But I didn’t care. I was exhausted and quite honestly, the thought of sleeping in Barrett’s bed turned me on like crazy. There was more than one way for me to get my kicks and still keep a clear conscience.

After meeting a little over a year ago, I could never quite shake her memory. Flaming red hair and cool green eyes had been in the face of every woman I’d been with since. My cock twitched again. Greedy bastard was on full show tonight, even when I carried her up to my apartment, which was ridiculous. I closed out the brief I’d been reading and opened another window. I needed to stop thinking about how good it would feel to taste her wine colored lips.

“Barrett?” Standing at the mouth of the hall with my Alma Mater written across her chest, she fisted the ends of the sleeves. Those creamy legs went on for miles, disappearing beneath the oversized sweatshirt. I dropped my feet from the table, my head spinning with desire. “I can’t sleep,” Her voice was small and weak. A far cry from the confident woman who had just told me less than two hours ago she would never let me have her.
